Welcome to Waco, Dr. Nelson

Everyone have a great summer!

October 21, 2016

Welcome to some and welcome back to others to the 2016-2017 school year and what looks to be a very successful year. Whether you will be teaching, counseling, cooking, providing support to the instructional process, maintaining or securing the campus, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your summer and are re-energized to engage in the exciting initiatives we will be focusing on this fall.

Some of you may be interested in knowing a little bit about me.  I am a product of Waco ISD. Having the opportunity to work with the dedicated faculty and staff of here is a dream come true. My name is Larryl Curtis, Sr. and I am honored to be the new principal of G.L. Wiley Opportunity Center. This will be my twentieth year in education. Before moving into administration, I taught History and Government at University High School. I have also served as an assistant principal at G.W. Carver Academy and as the Discipline Compliance Officer and Investigator for the district.  I have been happily married to my wife, Karen for twenty-two years, who also works for Waco ISD. We have two children-a son, Larryl, Jr. (L.J.), and a daughter, Josephine.

I anticipate a year that, as a team, we all can provide academic, social, and emotional growth of every child that comes through our doors in order to send each student back to their home campuses with the behavior corrected.

I have an open door policy in which I encourage communication with all faculty, staff, parents and community leaders.  I do believe, however, that upon identifying problems/issues, our power and energy should go towards solving the problem/issue rather than just in solely identifying the problems and stopping there.  Don’t bring problems without being willing to bring solutions as well. Thank you and I know that we are going to have a great year.
